Insertion Loss
Insertion loss for ferrite coaxial function and isolators is a function of the required bandwith of the device, the magnetic and dielectric losses and the environment in which the units must operate. For narrow-band devices insertion losses are low since the transmission lengths through dielectric materials are relatively short and the saturation magnetization of the ferrite material can be low, allowing minimum magnetic losses. For broad-band devices the insertion loss may be a little higher than for the narrow-band case since a more elaborate impedance-matching network must be used. This increases the transmission path through dielectric materials, and ferrite material having relatively high saturation magnetization must be used, which increases the magnetic losses. Some of the other steps taken are: 1) Silver plating on all conducting surfaces, and 2) designing the insertion loss characteristic to be symmetrical about the center frequency. Typically, the insertion losses for most of the devices will be about 0.25 dB per junction with maximums as given.
